Yoga FAQ

What should I wear?
Any clothes that allow you to move freely and feel comfortable are best for yoga experiences. Some people prefer tighter clothing while others prefer looser options. Most people prefer to be barefoot or sock footed. Feel free to wear or bring an extra layer on top that can help you feel comfortable as your body warms up and cools down.
-
What should I bring?
You are welcome to bring and use any of your own items (mat, blocks, blanket, strap, etc.). We have a few mats that we can share (which will be cleaned after each use). Other props will be made available as the collection grows!
You are welcome to bring water or snacks, or any other item you need to take care of yourself during your yoga session.
Please silence any phones or electronic devices while in session.

What if I am brand new to yoga?
Group classes are open to yogis with any experience level. Jessica Johnson offers individual yoga sessions, and enjoys introducing people to the practice.
You may benefit from scheduling one or two individual sessions prior to joining group sessions. Individual sessions help explain basic yoga terms, develop good technique or alignment, provide space for personal accommodations and a chance to ask all your questions.
-
What if I have injuries or physical limitations?
Please come join us! Yoga asana (poses or movements) can be modified for all body types and needs. Props such as blocks, chairs and blankets are often used to accommodate for injuries or physical limitations.
Jessica Johnson has experienced many joint injuries, some that still limit her functioning or range of movement as an adult, due to many years as a competitive athlete in her teens and 20s. As a result, she is passionate about helping people create a yoga practice that respects the specific needs of their body.

What is Jessica's yoga teaching background?
Jessica Johnson has been practicing yoga since she was a teenager in the ‘90s. She completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training course in 2021 through My Vinyasa Practice. She has taught individual and group sessions, in person and online. She has also conducted in person yoga retreats and loves these types of events.
Prior to teaching yoga, Jessica was a diving coach at the high school, college and Junior Olympic levels. She often coached divers who were new to the sport (or athletic movement in general) and loves teaching people new skills or hobbies!

How does yoga help with mental health?
Many parts of a yoga practice (the movements, breath work and meditation) can help to decrease anxiety and PTSD symptoms. Practices and movement sequences can be specifically designed to help decrease nervous system activation, turn down the body’s fight, flight or freeze reaction, and turn on the body’s built in relaxation response.
Yoga can also help individuals reconnect with their body, teaches self-regulation, as well as teach trauma survivors how to live safely in their bodies in the present moment.
Yoga can also support overall well-being because it is a great way to slow down and focus on yourself. Yoga has been shown to reduce emotional distress and increase quality of life in study participants. It is a great way to gain control over one’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences!
